Ireland Tour Update

To my surprise, it seems Globus was on the ball and realized there was a conflict with my airplane reservations. Apparently, they realized there was no way I was going to make my connecting flight to Baltimore from JFK. To my relief, they didn't move me to a later flight that left JFK which would've caused a 4 hour layover on my way back. Delta decided to have me fly to Dublin from Atlanta instead. I'l gladly take Atlanta over JFK. I know I won't have any problems with my flights arriving or departing from there. The only down side to flying out of Atlanta is I'll have an 8 hour flight vice 7 to Dublin. Also, I wasn't able to get the extra night in Dublin before the tour started that I wanted. Apparently, I waited too long and, Globus released any extra hotel rooms they had with the Dublin hotel. I suspect I'll be one tired puppy for the group's first dinner. Lastly, I found out that the tour I'm on is for all effective purposes sold out. According to my travel agent, there is 1 seat left on the tour for the dates I'm going. I'm delighted the tour will be going. I've never forgotten when Globus cancelled the first tour I signed up for with them. However, we are going to have one packed bus. A full tour means 40 plus people on it. I'll be curious to what kind of mix we get. On the Canada tour I did, we had some Aussies, some Kiwis, some Brits, a few Canadians to my surprise and 2 couples from the Dominican Republic as well as a bunch of Yanks. People from other countries can make the tour kinda cool. It's interesting to hear of their experiences. If we do have some Aussies, I won't envy how long they'll have to fly to get to Ireland. I suspect they would have to fly something like 20 hours at least. It's over 10 hours flying from Sydney to Los Angeles alone. They will be really tired. We'll see. I'm hoping that I'll be able to enjoy some Victoria Bitter in Ireland. I first tried it in Australia and, it is a great brew. Sadly, we can't get it in the U.S. It would be great to knock back a few pints of VB. That's all for this update. Cheers all!

Oh Crap!

As my future trip to Ireland gets closer, I've been checking on things concerning it. Today, I checked on the flights I'll be taking. To my shock, I found out Delta moved the flight I'll be taking to Dublin 3 hours. That means, I'll have a 4 hour plus layover in New York JFK Airport. That sucks! It gets worse coming back. Because they moved the departing flight to Dublin 3 hours, they had to move the returning flight 3 hours. So, I find I now have 1 hour to get through customs at JFK and catch my connecting flight home when I return to the states. I don't think that's going to work. I'm pretty sure Globus will have to change my flight reservations. If all that news wasn't annoying enough, I found out my flight from JFK to Dublin will be 6 hours 55 minutes airtime. 7 hours is a long flight. Hm. Maybe, I should see about flying over a day early so I don't fall asleep at my tour's first group dinner. I checked into that and, it would cost $195 not including tax. I can handle that. It would be nice to have an extra day in Dublin. The tour doesn't spend boat loads of time there any way so, it wouldn't hurt to see more of that city. Now, I have to wait to find out from my travel agent what is going to have flights wise as well as will Globus penalize me if I add a day at the beginning of the tour. We'll see. Hopefully, I can and, I'll get to spend more time in Ireland. We'll see. Stay tuned.

Snow Update

This is an update to my last post on the heavy snowfall received in Maryland on Friday/Saturday February 5/6,2010. The snow stopped falling in Laurel, Maryland at approximately 4:15 p.m. I know this because I was shoveling out my car around 3:30 p.m. and, I could see the snowfall taper off to where it finally stopped when I went back in my apartment. People started digging their cars out after that.
Where I live, I got mixed luck plowing wise in my apartment complex. To my surprise, the maintenance folks were able to get through and did plow a path through the parking lot. However, they didn't come particularly close to the cars and, everyone had a 3 to 4 foot by 4 foot wide by 2 foot high plus pile of snow to dig out. This didn't include having to dig out pathways on the side of their cars. I got a royal workout digging out my car and helping some others who live in my complex.
I think a lot of people should be able to make it to work tomorrow. However, we aren't over the hump yet. The latest National Weather Service weather forecast (http://weather.gov) is predicting an 80 percent chance of snow/sleet Tuesday night and a 70 percent chance of snow Wednesday. Snow Update

Here is my first update on the snowstore that socked Maryland. The snow started falling sometime around Noon. Initially, it was very light and a lot of it melted on the roads. Around 4 p.m., the snow started falling more heavily and by 5 p.m., there was 2 to 3 inches of accumulation. The snow continued to fall heavily during the night.
I tried gauging how the snow was from my apartment but, my apartment windows were partly covered with it so, I bundled up and walked out into it. At 6 a.m., I found my apartment complex parking lot had at least 17 inches of snow. Some areas around my apartment building have 23 inches plus. I walked up to the Maryland 198 road to see if it had been plowed. It had though there was only 1 stretch that was passable. There wasn't any traffic on it at that time. A good wind was blowing that blustery at times. According to the National Weather Service (NWS) (http://weather.gov), there will be gusts as high as 35 mph today.
The NWS is predicting the snow will continue to fall heavily until this evening with the possibility of another 4 to 8 inches of snow. In my opinion, people should stay home and off the roads if they can. The conditions are really bad right now. Stay tuned for more updates. Cheers!

Snow Forecast

I'm not looking forward to work today. The reason for that is the weather forecast. Beginning around 10 a.m., snow is supposed to start falling and continue till possibly Noon tomorrow. It's forecasted that the area where I live could get between 17 and 27 inches of snow. This could easily become the worst snowfall I've seen here since I moved here in 2001. That much snow for this area (Maryland) would make a royal mess of things. Road crews typically don't start plowing the main roads till it stops snowing. Also, the apartment complex where I live have their maintenance people plow the parking lots. This is dependent on them being able to get in. If we get as much snow as forecasted, they won't be able to get in till late Saturday at the earliest. Also, where are they going to put all that snow? It promises to be a massive mess.
AND, things could get worse. I've heard they're forecasting we'll get hit with even more of the white stuff around Wednesday of next week. This is shaping up to be one of the worst winters in some in Maryland. Stay tuned for more updates as the weather progresses. Cheers all!

Map Updates

Yesterday, I found out there was a map update for my Garmin Nuvi 750 GPS. So, I started downloading the massive thing. It was 2.06 gigabytes and incredibly, the file was compressed. I don't have any idea how large it would be uncompressed. I didn't have to pay for the update as I'd bought lifetime map update downloads. It's cheaper that way but, you have to download them vice getting an easy CD or DVD (not sure which they use). My Internet connection isn't super slow but, it still takes a good while to download a 2 gigabyte plus file. After you download it, you have decompress it and install it on the unit. Installing the map update can take up to 2 hours. Overall, it is a bit of pain installing updates but, the unit has been really handy at times. It'll tell me how long it'll take for me to arrive at a set destination, when I need to make various turns and automatically recalibrate a new route if I miss a turn for whatever reasons. Also, it's handy when I get the itch to go exploring. I'll just drive down a road to see where it goes. More often than not, I get lost but, the GPS ensures I can find my way home. I've been very glad I bought the thing. Cheers all!

Leave

Yesterday, I submitted my leave form at the post office where I work. Leave at the post office is kind of an oxymoron in that I don't actually EARN leave there. I can't as I don't work an assigned route all the time or, I'm not a FULL time regular carrier. In actuality, I inform the post office that I won't be available to work for a certain period of time. During that time, since I won't work, I won't earn ANY money or other benefits. It's the biggest drawback for me taking time off. Still, I love going on my trips and the lost income is worth getting to see the awesome things I get to see. Also, the trips help me deal with the stress at the post office. During the trips, I get TOTALLY away from the crap at work. It rejuvenates me to where when I return, I'm ready to deal with the postal bs again. If it weren't for me buying my TMAX, I'd be going on some kind of tour either this month or next. As long as I can afford it, I plan to do 2 major trips next year. I can't wait to go on those trips. It's a lot of fun planning them and reading up on where I'll be going. Now that my leave form is submitted, that's one more thing done on my travel checklist. The time can't fly fast enough till I get to take LEAVE and go on my future trip to Ireland.

Peru

As any reader of my blog knows, I love to travel. I'm impatiently counting the days till I do a 2 week tour of Ireland with Globus. Also, I'm beginning to plan the tour that will follow that. That tour will be to Peru to see the wonders of the Incas. The tour includes a visit to the lost city of Machu Picchu. To me, it would be something to see a lost city. Plus, I've never been to South America. The closest I've been is Aruba and Curacao during my only cruise to the Caribbean. The only down side I can see to the trip is the long travel time. I checked and even with the fastest connections, it's going to take over 14 hours to get to Lima, Peru from Baltimore Washington International Airport. Because of that, I'm going to plan on spending an extra day in Peru to recover from travel fatique. I don't like starting any tour tired. I learned the hard way when I did Globus's Scandanavian tour that it can be worth having an extra day to rest when I arrive. I didn't do that during the Scandanavian tour and, I was repeatedly falling asleep during the first group meeting. I was seriously wiped. So, I'll give myself an extra day in Lima to rest and see some of the city on my own. Then, when the tour kicks off, I'll be bright eyed and ready to see new wonders and share them with the awesome people in our group. It should be a blast. Cheers all!

My First Bike Road Trip

This past Wednesday and Thursday, I did my first bike road trip. I've been wanting to show my friend Harvey my TMAX. Finally, after checking my work schedule at the post office where I work, I decided to ride down to Richmond to show him the bike. The ride would be the longest one I've done so far. I would ride for 135 miles. Also, it would be more challenging than I expected. Riding down to Richmond, I encountered rain 40 miles outside the city. The rain wouldn't let up till later that night. The second problem I encountered was it getting dark. That can create problems if I accidentally fog up the face shield on my helmet. At times, I've had it where I couldn't see outside my helmet.
Once I arrived in Richmond, I checked in with my friend Harvey. I briefly showed him the bike and then, I followed him to the hotel where I was staying. It was a Holiday Inn close to some Kroger Convention Center I think. The hotel was very nice and, I would enjoy my stay there.
Once I changed out of my riding gear, Harvey and I drove to an Outback Steakhouse restaurant he's eaten at a number of times. This would be my first time to eat at one of those. I'd heard good things about the restaurant chain and, it would live up to what I'd heard. Their bloomin onion was outstanding and, the porterhouse steak I ordered was excellent. Also, I got to try out a James Boag lager which is an Australian brand. It turned out to be a good lager and, I particularly enjoyed getting to have some real Aussie beer.
The next morning, Harvey and I had breakfast at the hotel's breakfast buffet. The buffet reminded me of previous buffets on Globus tours I've done. I can't wait to go on the Ireland tour I've signed up for. The buffet was good and, I was able to get very filled up.
After finishing breakfast, I gathered my stuff, checked out of my hotel room and loaded it into my bike. Then, I thanked Harvey for a nice time and told him I'd try to make it back to Richmond in a couple months. It's always a pleasure seeing him. After that, I got on my bike and started it up. I waved good bye and drove off to the nearest gas station where I tanked up the gas tank. After that, I hit the road and began my trip back.
The trip back ended up being pretty scary thanks to wind turbulence. At one point, my bike was shaking slightly sideways while I was going 70 mph plus. I found out that if I decreased my speed, it would reduce the turbulence. However, it made the ride back longer time wise. I wanted stop and hope the winds might die down but, the weather forecast was predicting things would get worse. It was supposed to start raining again around 3 p.m. I wanted to be home before that started. I ended up gritting my teeth and calming my nerves so I could continue the ride. After 2 hours 20 minutes, I made it home. I've rarely been so glad to see my apartment.
I thought about what I might be able to do differently on my next road trip. There were 2 things that came to mind. First, I could get a touring windshield for my bike. The windshield will supposedly reduce wind turbulence and noise. Second, I could buy some wind deflectors which should reduce wind turbulence around my legs and the middle section of the bike. Because of the Ireland tour and taxes, these 2 ideas will have to wait for 3 or 4 months. Once I get those 2 items, I hope to do another road trip to Richmond. It would probably be sometime in the summer. Hopefully, the nicer weather will make for a more enjoyable ride as well. We'll see. Cheers all!

Review on Bill Cosby CD

Last week, I listened to Bill Cosby's "When I Was Growing Up" CD. This is a review on it.
Bill Cosby remains one of my favorite comedians. His material doesn't seem to age. Plus, it's nice in that it doesn't contain any profanity or other nasty stuff. It's simply very funny and enjoyable to listen to. His CD "When I Was Growing Up" has a number of excellent pieces in it. In one of them, he tells of his attempts to hypnotize his brother Harold. During one such attempt, he sends his hypnotized brother in to smack his Dad. However, the scheme falls apart when Harold informs his father that Cos hypnotized him. Another hilarious one is where Cos tells of when he found a frog at camp. He puts the frog in his pocket. The frog makes normal frog sounds from his pocket. Cos gets the idea there is money to made here. He bets a friend 50 cents that he can make his left leg (the one with the pocket holding the frog) burp. He claims to made over $500 off kids at camp doing this. Cos later uses the frog in a prank on his Dad. While his Dad isn't looking, he slips the frog into his Dad's glass of milk. When his Dad reaches for the glass, the frog comes out of the glass surprising his Dad. His Dad ends up on the floor with the frog sitting on his forehead.
The CD has a total of 8 skits. It was recorded live at the Westbury Music Fair theater in October 1970. All the skits feature stories about Cosby's childhood vice other CDs which tells of his various misadventures as an adult and parent. The CD was Cosby's biggest hit during the 70's and, it's obvious why as it is extremely funny and poignant. Any listener will be taken back to their own childhood when things were a lot more fun and innocent. My only complaint with this CD is its length. It runs approximately 35 minutes. I big time wanted more stuff on this CD. 35 minutes isn't nearly enough of this great comedian and man. If you want to listen to something that will make you laugh and never grow old, you should buy Cosby's "When I Was A Kid." It is an excellent CD.

Gloves

I seem to be collecting gloves lately. I've bought 3 different pairs for riding my bike and, I bought another pair L.L. Bean gloves for the cold weather. Today, I ordered my 4th pair for riding when I paid for some battery powered heated Harley Davidson gloves. I decided to try those after some cheapo batter powered gloves I bought on Ebay turned out to be serious stinkers. They put out virtually no heat at all. The Harley Davidson gloves should do a lot better. If they don't, I'm definitely returning them as they cost $170 just for the gloves. They require $40 rechargable batteries for each of the gloves. With tax, the price tag came to $262! Ouch!
While my L.L. Bean gloves have done a great job of keeping my hands warm, they have 1 serious flaw - they're bulky. Because of that, I want to buy some Underarmour Men's Jonesy gloves. To my frustration, they're are currently unavailable. They seem to be selling as fast as they get them in the stores. I plan to call the Annapolis and Bethesda stores again to see if either have any extra large Jonesy gloves in stock. We'll see. Hopefully, that'll be my last addition to my glove collection. Harris Teeter

I wanted to post something other than a post on the post office. Plus, I needed some place to go riding to on my bike. The Harris Teeter store I checked out is located at 8184 Westside Blvd in Fulton, Maryland by a development called Maple Lawn. The store in fairly new. According to the company website, the store was opened October 6, 2009. I'd passed by it a couple times on rides through Fulton. I'd never been to a Harris Teeter store so I was curious to see what it was like.
The store was of good store. According to the company store fact page, it has over 49,000 square feet. I know they had a number of aisles as well as good size produce department, deli counter, sushi counter and seafood counter. The store seemed a bit up scale in that it had cheeses from all over the world and, they have a wine consultant. As far as cleanliness, I found the store to be very clean and well organized. Prices wise, I can't say how they stack up compared to local Weis, Giant and Safeway supermarkets. I don't shop enough to be knowledgeable about food prices. One handy feature I found about the store is that it is open 24 hours a day. Also, for those who don't have time to shop, you can order your groceries from them on-line. They have your order ready for you when you stop in. I don't know if they offer delivery as well. The chain has a program called the Very Important Customer (VIC) card which gives special discounts on certain items and, it has an email letter offering further specials to VIC card members. On my trip to the Fulton store, I was able to save over $3 using the VIC card. That may not seem like much but, I only spent $23 there. I didn't need tons of groceries on this trip plus, I don't have tons of storage space on my TMAX.
Overall, I found the store to be very nice. I'd be very willing to shop there again. The people that work there were very helpful and considerate. Parking was adequate and the location is easy to get to. It's located not far from the Maryland 216 and 29 intersection. If you live the Fulton area, they're worth checking out. For those who live Columbia, Maryland, there is a store located in Kings Contrivance. Cheers all!

Bodies

Things remain really rough at the post office where I work. We are in a serious manning crunch. We need some new subs desperately. My boss had promised me today off to recoup. Regretfully, he couldn't keep his word because we had a second regular carrier call out i.e. let him know they couldn't work today. We were already down 1 route because of the regular who sprained their collarbone. Luckily, we had a sub from another post office who was able to cover that route. I ended up casing the 2nd route's mail. I don't know the route's mail case well at all and was horribly slow in casing the route's mail. At times, it was very frustrating. I couldn't find addresses I knew were on the route case SOMEWHERE. Plus, I'd already endured 3 days on another route that I'm not very good at and got kicked at. Monday, I was out till 8:40 p.m. delivering mail. Worse still, tomorrow, I get to deliver on a route I've NEVER cased and only delivered to in various pieces. Tomorrow will not be a good day.
To add insult to injury, we have another sub who it seems has an aversion to working in the cold and so, the sub hasn't worked for over 3 weeks now. I wonder what the heck this sub is going to do when they get their own mail route. Are they going to try to take leave for a month or more during the winter? It's really absurd. The kicker is we can't get rid of this sub. So, we have the sub on the books even though they're not working and who knows when they will finally return to work. Last week, this sub called in and asked what routes would need help. My boss foolishly told the sub and, the sub said they didn't care to work those routes. Since when does an employee get to pick and choose what work they do? It's really unbelievable and ties in with my first paragraph because if, we could get more bodies i.e. substitutes, this sub couldn't get away with this. My boss could let her sit at home till the cows came home. However, with us hurting so bad manning wise, this sub can play this game.
For me, I'm getting seriously fed up with the situation. I don't mind taking an occasional bump i.e. part of a route in addition to the route I'm assigned to BUT, I'm not prepared to do it regularly. Also, I don't think it's fair for me to be the ONLY sub at our post office to be on call i.e. have to come in at short notice. We've got to get more bodies i.e. subs. If we don't, down the line, I'll have to say enough. My job at the post office isn't critical. I can survive on my military retirement and the interest from the annuity my beloved step-mother left me. We'll see what happens. Stay tuned.

Contract

A friend at work recommended I read the contract that applies to rural mail carriers. I found out where it was located on the web and, I got a shock. The contract is 88 pages long and includes 14 memorandums of understanding. My eyes got glazed by some of the terminology in the contract. It can be very wordy at times. I learned some new things like the progressive levels of discipline in the Postal Service. However, the contract caused me come up with a number of questions like how many letters of warning do you receive before you get a 7 day suspension. Also, I wanted to find out the rules concerning calling out from work. I'd heard that you could call out for up to 3 days before having to provide documentation as to why you couldn't work. However, I found out from my shop steward that the supervisor MAY request documentation for 3 days or less. If you don't provide the documentation, your supervisor can charge you with absent without leave on your attendence record. Where is the section about absent without leave? Also, where does it state how many hours a substitute carrier can be made to work or that they must stand by their phone on days they're not scheduled to work in case they're needed on short notice. I suspect I'll have to ask my steward about all those. I'm learning the hard way about some of those issues. I'm also learning don't do your supervisor any favors. They won't help you. When push comes to shove, all your supervisor is going to care about getting their mail delivered. If you get messed over in the process, too bad. The more I work at the post office, the more I miss the Air Force. Believe me, it's a lot easier in the Air Force. You don't have the amount of bs that I've seen in the Postal Service. With all the bs, I've got to come up with an alternative plan to working at the post office. So far, I've failed come up with one but, I am really getting fed up with the place. Chardonnay

Not wanting to post constant depressing post office tales, I thought I'd tell of my latest funny misadventure.
I tried to think of something special to do at midnight on New Year's. Finally, I decided to drink 1 of the bottles of wine I'd bought in France during the Globus La France tour I did in September 2008. These were the bottles that I discovered to my dismay I couldn't carry on board my flight back to the states and consequently had to buy another travel bag so I could pack them in my suitcase. I decided to drink the 2003 Chardonnay. I put the bottle in my fridge to properly chill.
I had a time uncorking the bottle. The reason for that is because the cork had dried out because I'd let the bottle sit upright so the wine wasn't touching it and keeping it somewhat moist. Finally, I managed to get the cork out and poured some of the wine into a wine glass I'd bought years ago and rarely ever used. I had to dust off the box when I pulled it off the shelf I'd stored it on. The wine to my taste was very good though I'm definitely not any kind of expert on wine. That was when I did something that turned out rather embarrassing. I proceeded to drink the wine like it was water. I drank the entire bottle (standard 750ml bottle) in about 25 minutes or less. Wine is not like water as this wine was 12.5 percent alcohol. Also, I apparently didn't have much in my stomach so there wasn't much to slow down my body ingesting the alcohol. In less than an hour, to my surprise, I was sloshed. I had to put my hand against the wall when I tried to walk and, I made a LOT of corrections in my typing as I tried to post things on the Internet. When I laid down to go to sleep, I was out like a light and slept like a rock.
It was kind of fun getting toasted as I haven't drank anything alcoholic in months (I think). The wine brought back very pleasant memories of the trip to France. It was a great trip. As I've mentioned before, I can't wait to go on another one. God willing, that will be in approximately 5 months. It seems like ages away. I may have an interesting alcohol adventure then as one of the optional tours is to a Guiness warehouse. I've tried Guiness. It tasted very yeasty. However, I've heard people swear fresh Guiness was the stuff. We'll see. Hopefully, I'll get to try some while I'm there (fingers crossed). Cheers all!

Survived

I managed to survive 4 days of doing a full route AND delivering an additional half route. However, the work took it toll. I'm seriously wiped. Worse still, I don't believe the post office where I work is out of the woods yet. My boss apparently thinks the regular who sprained their collarbone falling on ice is going to be 100% next week. I don't think he will be. If that's the case, we'll have to split his route up delivery wise. That will lead to more annoying shenanigans like we had earlier this week. Those are getting really old.
More incredibly, a sub who may have scammed her way out of way for the Christmas holiday had the cheek to call in and dictate what routes the sub would work. The alternative is the sub won't work any and, we'll be royally screwed. This is totally ridiculous. Since when can a substitute carrier decide what routes they're going to work? The kicker is this sub will get away with this. As I've previously reported, it seems next to impossible to be fired at the Postal Service. Though, I'm getting to the point where I may test that maxim myself. Want to bet I won't get the same slack the others have?
So, the year 2010 isn't starting out well for me. God only knows what drama I'm going to have to deal with this year. It shouldn't be this ridiculous. The only alternative I see is resigning from the Postal Service. However, if I do that, what do I do job wise? That has been the major problem I've faced the 3 and a half years I've stuck it out there. God still hasn't shown me a decent alternative. It's very frustrating. Riding

Yesterday, I got to go riding on my TMAX for the first time in over a week. Thanks to it warming up and raining Saturday, a lot of the snow and ice we got slammed with 2 Saturdays ago had melted. It was nice to get back on the road and ride the bike. It continues to impress me with its acceleration and power. It has no problem doing 80 or 85 mph. I rode by Baltimore Washington International Airport. I have the travel itch real bad and, I wanted to see some airplanes. Sadly, it's still over 150 days before I get to go on my future Globus Ireland tour. After that tour, as long as I don't buy anything major, I should be able to do 2 tours in 2011. That would be seriously awesome.

After checking out the airport, I rode home. Later, I spoke with my friend Harvey. He has the travel itch as bad as I do and like me, he can't afford to do any major travelling either. I hope to ride down to Richmond once things get slower at the post office where I work and show him my TMAX. The ride to Richmond is about 130 miles and should take about 2 hours and 15 minutes. It'll be my longest ride. It should be interesting to see how it goes. Hopefully, I'll be able to do the ride soon. Even a ride down to Richmond would make me feel like I got away from here for a little bit. We'll see. Cheers all!

Stress

I'd forgotten how stressful the Christmas season can be at the post office where I work. It's our busiest time of the year. People mail lots of Christmas cards and send various presents to their family and friends. The packages are the biggest pain as you can't stuff one of those in a mailbox normally. They fill the mail truck up rapidly and, it is a challenge to keep them in order so you don't accidentally fail to deliver one at an address. If you do, you have two choices. You can take it back to the post office and try to deliver it again the next day which means you have to mess with the package a 2nd time or, you can drive back to the residence and drop it off. Either choice costs you time and, the day is long enough already.
If things weren't stressful enough, we have subs who decide to make it more stressful. How do they do that? They do that by not showing up for work. They know they can't be fired and, they apparently decide they want to take time off before Christmas. If they properly requested the time off, they know the request would be turned down. This is one of the prime times when regular carriers want to take time off so they can spend more time with their families or travel to see members of their extended family. So, they call out. As every post office is equally swamped, there is little chance we can use subs from other post offices at this time to cover for them. So, those of us who are already swamped on the routes we're already assigned to have to take on the extra work the subs who called out didn't take. For me, this was a back breaker Tuesday. I had to case my assigned route and then, I had to case an auxiliary route we have. Then, I had to pull down the mail for both routes, somehow keep the 2 different route's mail and packages separate in my truck and deliver it. To make matters worse, the auxiliary hadn't been delivered Saturday (because of snow) or Monday (the regular sub assigned to it called out). That means I had 4 days of mail for it. Then, there is the snow. While the roads become more passable every day since the huge snow fall we had Saturday, people haven't cleared away the snow from their boxes. That means that the carrier has to get out of their truck and slog through foot deep snow to get to their box. It really slows you down.
To add to the burden, we are getting a LOT of late Express Mails. What are late Express Mails? Late Express Mails are items mailed Express Mail that arrive so late that it is impossible to deliver them by Noon like we normally would. However, we still have to deliver these the same day they arrive. So, we get more of these that we have to deliver in addition to everything else. I got tagged with 2 of them which cost me another 30 minutes.
So, I was seriously overloaded Tuesday. To compound matters, my boss gets on me about how long I'm taking. I'm fully aware of how long it's taking. I very much want to get the job done and go home. I very much am cursing the damn subs who called out who caused me to have to take all this extra mail. At one point, I'm ready to drive my mail truck back to the post office, unload it, leave and tell them I'll see them after Christmas. After all, I can always claim to not feeling well which would be true as I'm seriously stressing. Plus, if they can't fire the other craps, they shouldn't be able to fire me. Instead, I grit my teeth and keep slogging away. I end up racking up over 12 hours (my 2nd in a row) and go in early the next day to try to get a jump on the stuff. I end up working my 3rd 12 hour day. (groan) The only good thing about this whole mess is I will get a nice paycheck.
Thankfully, Christmas is tomorrow. The mail volume will start dropping and continue to drop through the summer. Also, I'm keeping my fingers crossed we get the 7 additional subs my boss requested. If we get those, the other subs who don't want to work can do so and, it won't affect me i.e. I won't have to pick up their slack. I look forward to the Christmas season winding down and getting a couple days off. I can seriously use them. Cheers all!

Snow!

Yesterday, the weatherman was predicting we were going to get royally clobbered snow wise today. They were predicting as much as 26 inches of snow. It turned out they got their predictions right. When I walked out to my car at 5:45 a.m., we already had at least 5 inches of the white stuff. Everyone at the Post Office wondered if we would get sent home. The weather predictions said it was only going to get worse. Worse still, the person who was supposed to put the chains on our mail trucks for some reason didn't. While a number of the trucks had good tires on them with good tread, it wasn't nearly enough to handle 8 plus inches of snow. Upper management decided we would try to deliver some of the mail and so, we were sent out with our automated sorted mail i.e. DPS mail. It turned out to be a fruitless attempt. The snow fall went from 2 inches an hour to 4! With already nearly a foot of snow on the ground, there was no way the trucks could get through it. As soon as the trucks were sent out, a number of them became stuck. In my personal case, I tried hard to get through and deliver my mail but, a number of the roads I had to deliver mail to weren't plowed. It was impossible to get through them. After getting royally stuck and only able to get free thanks to 2 awesome strangers who helped get my truck free, I gave up and very carefully made me way back to the post office where I work. All of the carriers both city and rural were called back. By Monday, the roads should be more passable and, we'll have to play catch up mail wise. The current snow fall is supposed to continue through tonight. It may look pretty but, it has made it impossible to get any where. Stay tuned for more updates. Cheers all!

Payraise

The word that those of us who work rural postal routes were going to be a payraise was confirmed today. I found out in my paycheck that my pay went up to $18.50 an hour. The payraise was part of the last contract the rural carriers union had negotiated with the Postal Service. The raise was 1.5% which in the case of substitute carriers worked out to 26 cents an hour. I was delighted to get any kind of raise at all. It'll help me pay off my bike, top up my IRA and pay off the future trip to Ireland I hope to do that much sooner.

Disgusted

Almost 2 weeks ago, we had a sub throw away mail. If there is anything you can't do at the Postal Service, that should've been it. The sub should've been fired. Did the sub get fired? Nope! The sub got a 2 week suspension without pay. I couldn't believe it. I told my boss you can get away with anything at the Post Office. My boss mumbled that if the sub messes up again, the sub will face even greater punishment and, this was the sub's first offense. This should've been the sub's first and LAST offense considering what the sub did. As far as greater punishment, big whoop! We've got a sub that has walked off the job 3 TIMES and, the sub is still there! We've got other subs that have been giving lines for months about childcare and, they're still getting away with it. I'm totally disgusted at this point. I feel like a total schmuck for trying to doing a good job and going the extra mile. I'm definitely not going to go the extra mile anymore. It isn't worth it. And, I'm not going to take anymore bumps after doing a route. That'll probably get me cut to 1 day a week. Fine! At least, I won't be the SCHMUCK who is out there at 7:30 in the evening delivering mail. They can find another dummy to do it. Plus, after every thing I've seen, I'm not terribly worried about getting fired. That seems next to impossible to do. Cheers all!

White Flint Mall

This past Sunday, I was looking for some place to ride to. The weather was nice and, I had an itch to explore some where new. I haven't been impressed with the prizes at the Hanover, Maryland Dave & Buster's (D&Bs) . I found out the only other D&Bs was at the White Flint Mall just off the Rockville Pike. I decided to check out the D&Bs there as well as the mall.
The mall was pretty with a number of very nice looking shops. Size wise, it wasn't super big though it made up for that some by having 3 floors. The mall had some anchor stores including Lord & Taylor and Bloomingdales. Parking was decent.
In regards to the Dave & Busters, initially, I had a hard time finding the arcade. I did manage to find it and checked it out. Size wise, it was probably smaller than the Arundel Mills D&Bs. However, the prize booth was definitely bigger and better stocked. They had a 30 gigabyte Zune player, an iPod and one of the Apple phones. I forget what they're called.
While walking around, I noticed a girl playing the Deal or No Deal game. I decided to play it to see how I would do. I've found it pretty interesting watching the tv show. I found out my luck in this game royally stunk! To my disbelief, I managed to pick the case that had the lowest number of ticket (2) TWICE in a ROW. I definitely got the idea I better stick with Spin & Win.
The ride back home was uneventful barring getting honked at once and having cars passed around me. I was being cautious riding wise. I wouldn't move over to another lane unless I was absolutely certain it was safe to do so. I continue to be pleased with my TMAX. It can really take off and, it's a pleasure to ride. I can't wait to ride it down to Richmond to show it to my friend Harvey. Cheers all!

Dave & Busters

Dave & Busters brought back half priced games this week. Normally, I find it very expensive to play their games. My favorite game is Spin & Win. I feel that game gives you the most control barring a hoop shooting game or some such. With Spin & Win, you decide when to stop the spinning light. If you time it right, you can consistently get it within the area where one of the 1,000 ticket lights are. At that point, it's just a matter of managing to stop it the split second it hits the 1,000 ticket light. Last night, I probably missed the 1,000 ticket light 40 or 50 times BUT, because I was getting it in the range of the light, I was able to hit it 16 TIMES! I ended up winning over 20,000 tickets which isn't bad for $100. I've seen others turn in just 2 or 3,000 tickets.
The half priced games promotion they had made it affordable to play their games. I'm sure Dave & Busters still makes money with that promotion. You look at what the prizes cost and what it'll cost you to win enough tickets and, they're making money. Still, it isn't able trying to find a bargain at Dave & Busters. It's about having fun playing the games and, they are definitely fun. I'd give a large whoop every time I hit the 1,000 ticket light.
To my delight, my ticket hoard is now up to 253,345. I can get multiple prizes of anything I want there. That's neat thinking about that. I still haven't been wiped out by the prizes they have at the Arundel Mills Dave & Busters but, I'm not going to win a prize. I go just to win the game and gets LOTS of tickets. I hope to go back next week and add to my hoard. Cheers all!

Hard Day


Yesterday, I had a hard day of work at an alternate post office I sometimes work at. One of their regular carriers injured his foot and, his doctor put him on mandatory rest for a week so it could heal better. The Postmaster at that post office asked for me to cover the route. I assumed I was going to get a day of training with the regular carrier and so took my time arriving at that post office. I got one huge shock when I found out I would have to do the route cold turkey. There wouldn't be any training and, because I'd taken my time getting to the post office, I'd wasted 20 minutes I could've been casing mail. It ended up being a slog. Normally, mail routes follow a path of right turns. This one did anything but that. Also, the directions weren't clear where I should deliver mail and where I shouldn't. I found myself doing a number of u-turns so I could go back and deliver to boxes I'd missed. Lastly, I had a time finding addresses on the mail case because I didn't know it.

I managed to get the mail delivered for the route and, I took some comfort knowing I'll do better tomorrow. I'm scheduled to work at the alternate post office today and Thursday. I hope things will go better. We'll see. Cheers all!

Arlington National Cemetary

Yesterday, I visited Arlington National Cemetary. I first visited in during my July Globus Historic U.S. East tour. While there, I failed to get some decent photos so I decided to go back and try again. My Garmin GPS proved priceless in finding the place. Thanks to that, I was able to drive there in about 35 minutes. The first thing I did once I got there was take some pictures fo the USMC War Memorial. The memorial is located just outside the cemetary. It is a very impressive memorial. It features bronze statues of 5 Marines and 1 Navy medic raising the flag on Mount Suribachi, Iwo Jima. The flag raising immortalized the Marines. It is a magnificent memorial.
Inside the cemetary are countless rows of white marble crosses marking the graves of soldiers, sailors, marines and coasties who have died in service to their country. Many veterans ask that when they die, they be buried at Arlington. You can see why if you ever visit the place. I know when I die, I want to be buried there.
One thing I didn't get to do when I visited with Globus was see the Tombs of the Unknowns. We had a lot of things to see in D.C. and a limited amount of time. The Tombs of the Unknowns are the remains of military members who were killed in World War I, II, the Korean War and Vietnam and couldn't be identified. On the main tomb at the end of the epitaph, it says "known only to God." That is how it is for the these unknown troops who gave the final measure of service to their country. A lone sentry patrols the tombs standing guard, day and night. Immaculately uniformed, they march back and forth guarding the tombs. I found it a moving sight.
My last stop was to see President John F. Kennedy's gravesite. Few men have spoken such inspirational words as he did. I still think it tragic how he died. With him, I can't help but wonder how things might've been if he had lived. Next to him is his wife Jackie Onassis who epitomized class and style of the time. Close by are his 2 brothers Robert and Ted. Robert is another one you have to wonder what if. Why did he have to die?
I left Arlington in somber reflection. In my opinion, there isn't any more sacred ground in the entire United States. It is filled with the remains of those who placed their country above themselves and some gave their lives for it. It is the burial place of many of its military heroes. It is a deeply moving reminder of the price this country has had to pay to stay free.

Honeycrisp Apples

One of my MySpace friends (I forget who) raved about honeycrisp apples. She said they were pricey (she wasn't kidding there) but, they were very good. I'd never heard of the things. Later, I heard them being advertised at the local Safeway. My curiousity was peaked. So, when I visited the base commissary and saw them, I decided to try some of them. I found them to be better than red delicious apples. They have a better flavor. Also, they are every bit as crunchy as a red delicious. Price wise, they are expensive. Safeway sells them for $3 a pound unless you have their shopping card in which case they are $1.49 a pound. That isn't cheap but, they are good apples. I plan to buy some more of them while they're in season. If you like apples, I'd recommend you try these. Bon appetit!

Clever Thieves

Today, some car thieves showed some cleverness where I work. If someone had seen someone breaking into a person's car where I work, they would've raised the alarm immediately. The would be car thieves realized that. So, they brought a tow truck and had it look like someone was having car trouble. They summarily towed away the car they were stealing. The person's whose car it was got a shock when they walked out to the parking lot and found it missing. Luckily, the car hadn't been stolen long before it was noticed it was missing. Apparently, the police were tipped off soon enough to where they caught the clever car thieves. I find it scary that they would try to do this in brought daylight in a postal parking lot.

My Step-Mom's Birthday

Today is my belated step-mother's birthday. Her birthday was always 1 day before mine. Her death still saddens me. I wish she had started the cancer treatment sooner so she might've beat it again. I wonder if she was tired of fighting it. It was her third bout with it and fighting it that much had to take its toll. I miss her. She was a good woman and though we had our moments, we had some good times together too. I'll never forget doing the Lord of the Rings film festival with her. I wish she could've come along on the Egypt tour I did in March. We had talked about it. I think she would've enjoyed it. I wish I could've given her the things I bought for her on my September 2008 France tour. I had no idea she was in such a bad way. I am glad she isn't suffering anymore. I know fighting the cancer took its toll. The last time I spoke with her, she sounded really weak and, she wasn't up to a long chat like we usually did. I'm grateful to her for the annuity she left me. I had no idea she had planned that. I was glad just to be her son and to know her. So, Happy Birthday Mom. I'm sorry you are gone but, I know you're happy to be reunited in heaven with Grampa Hank and Grama Henry and others you loved. Know that you are missed and remembered.
Holidays at the Post Office

If there is one place you pay work wise for a holiday, it's at the post office. This past week, I got to enjoy Columbus Day. The extra day off proved really useful as I was able to pick up my new Yamaha TMAX. However, I knew I would pay for that extra day off when I went back to work and, I did. All categories of mail were heavier because of the extra day. I ended up with just over 8 trays of mail, 24 packages, 15 or so small parcels and 8 accountables (1 Express Mail and 7 Certifieds). Because of all that mail and the route I was on, I ended up working almost 12 and 1/2 hours. I tried to work fast as I knew I was in a race with the sun. I needed to finish delivering the mail before the sun went down as that would make it harder to see inside the boxes and make sure I was delivering each person's mail to the right person. The sun ended up winning the race but, I only had to deliver the mail in the dark to 1 multi-box. I managed to use the mail truck's internal lights to shine some light into the box so I could see the address numbers and names. As it gets darker earlier later in the year, I'll make sure I take my miner's light just in case I have to deliver mail in the dark to multi-boxes. The light enables me to see inside the boxes in the dark. You wear the light on your head which makes it easier to use vice trying to hold a flashlight and stick mail in the boxes at the same time. Unfortunately, I didn't realize I was going to be out as late as I was and so, I didn't bring it with me. Considering all things, the day went all right. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I don't have to do that particular route again today. I don't like it because of all the multi-boxes and, I'm still slow at sorting the mail on its mail case. My New TMAX

Thanks to the Columbus Day holiday, I was able to pick up my new Yamaha TMAX scooter. It's hard to believe the bike is a scooter. It has sport bike looks, handling and speed. The speed really surprised me. I was riding on Maryland 198 enroute to home and gave it a little gas. The next thing I knew, I was doing over 60 mph. Later, I took it up to 80 mph and, it didn't have any trouble at all with that. I suspect it could've gone a lot faster but, I wasn't up to it as I wasn't use to such speeds.
I did find 2 things that I wasn't thrilled about with the bike. First, it's tricky trying to open the storage compartment on it. I had to work the key repeatedly to try to get the compartment to open. However, I did find the compartment roomy. You can fit a full face helmet in there and a few other items. Also, it has a light the comes on so in the dark you can see what's in there. I thought that was a nice touch. Second, the turn signal doesn't appear to have any kind of clicker on it. The reason that's important is it reminds you have it on and to turn it off once you've made your turn. With it being so quiet, it's easy to forget you used the turn signal.
Overall, the bike is impressive. It has very good suspension which gives it a very smooth ride. It rides over 5 inches off the ground making it easy to pass over objects on the road as well as take tight turns. It has an excellent control panel with speedometer, trip meter, gas gauge, battery gauge and clock. It also offers a tachometer with the speedometer which is useless in my opinion since you don't have to physically change gears on this bike. Interestingly, you don't have to worry about when to get oil changes and other maintenance done. The bike is set up to where it flash various warnings when it's time to get things done like an oil change. That'll be a help. I haven't forgotten that I overlooked the oil change I was supposed to do on my Vino Classic scooter.
Anyone who is interested in a TMAX should see about getting the 2009 model. The 2010 will cost nearly $500 more and from what I've seen, there isn't any noticable difference between the 2 models barring the color offered. The 2009 comes in Dark Blue or Cadmium Yellow (for an extra $100) whereas the 2010 comes in Gray only.

Resume French Lessons

In late February, I stopped my French lessons with my French teacher Nadya. In less than a week, I was going to take a 12 day tour of Egypt. I didn't realize it but, those would be my last lessons for over 7 MONTHS. Due to work, travels and my teacher's trip back to Europe, we wouldn't resume them until today. While I did get a little bit of practice speaking French in Quebec City, Canada, I was still VERY rusty. Also, I ran into my ages old problem of vocabulary. I still don't know enough words in French. I could think of something to say in English and then, I struggled to figure out how I would say it in French. Thankfully, I brought a French-English dictionary to class with me as well as a French verb book that covers over 500 French verbs.

Overall, the lesson went well enough considering I haven't studied in 7 MONTHS. My teacher wouldn't be my teacher unless she assigned me homework (les devoir). I plan to slog away at that tomorrow. Luckily, it wasn't that much though it'll still be a slog doing it. We'll see how bad she tears up my sentences. She can be a tough teacher. Salut!
Map Updates

Last week, I used my Garmin Nuvi 750 GPS to get to the Elkridge Harley Davidson dealership for my motorcycle safety course. The unit was invaluable in finding the place and showing me the quickest route. Interestingly, when I arrived at the dealership, I entered no man's land as there weren't any accurate maps on the unit showing the street that runs parallel to the dealership. That reminded me about getting the latest map update for the unit.
Garmin offers 2 ways you can get map updates. You can download them or you can get a single DVD with the update. The cheapest option is to download them. Garmin offers lifetime map updates for just under $120. That's a great deal especially when compared to spending nearly $70 a piece for each update on DVD. However, there is a downside to it. I have a decent internet connection and, it takes me routinely something like 7 HOURS to download each update. They are that BIG. The last update was over 2 gigabytes in size. Because of this, I would prefer to get the DVD as it would be easier to install each update. However, as I previously mentioned, each update costs just under $70 on DVD. Considering Garmin releases up to 4 updates a year, you can end up spending more on updates than what your GPS unit cost you! I suspect Garmin is scamming people on those $70 DVD updates. I can't believe they cost that much to produce. Because of the high cost of the DVDs, I bite the bullet and download the updates. Barring this serious nuisance, I've been very pleased with my Garmin unit and would recommend it to others. Cheers all.

3rd Day of Class

It was our last day of class. We'd lost 1 member of our class as she didn't do well enough during the 2nd day to continue. She would come back for the next class and try again. Another person did the same thing she would do and joined our class. This time, he would pass the practical.
The instruction began with the hardest of the various exercises we had to do. We had to do a figure 8 inside a box in 1st gear and not take the bike outside any of the box's lines. In order to do this, we had to ride the clutch and throttle. We couldn't go too fast otherwise, we'd go outside the box's lines. If we went too slow, we wouldn't have enough inertia to keep the bike up and, it would drop. I did that on the 2nd day. I would nearly do that a number of times on this exercise. I think everyone in our class had problems with this except the guy who was back for his 2nd try.
After that, we moved on to more fun exercises like swerving. We would leave an assigned point, quickly get the bike into 2nd gear and come up to another gate where a barrier of cones would be. The instructor would tell us which way to swerve. Later, she would throw in another challenge in that would signal with her arms at the last moment which way to swerve or to brake.
Another exercise we concerned cornering. In this exercise, we had to go through one turn then shift into 2nd gear and reach a speed of 20 mph. We would come up on a set of cones which was the starting point of the corner. At this point, we were supposed to adjust our speed, look through the turn, lean into it, increase power and come out of the turn.
The last exercise we practiced was stopping in a turn. This was to simulate doing a turn and finding something unexpected that forced us to come to a stop. The difficulty in this was you don't have the traction in a turn that you have going straight. You lose some of it as the bike is going it to go through the turn. In order to stop properly, you have to bring the bike upright and then, you hit the brakes. It was actually pretty simple.
Once we finished all the last exercise we had to do, our teacher had us do a review. We practiced a number of exercises we would have to do for the practical test. Then, without a break, we took the test. Initially, I did well only losing 3 points for breaking the line on the figure 8 box once. Then, on the very last exercise, things went really wrong. I came out of the first turn and, I had difficulty getting the bike into 2nd gear. At last, I got up to 20 mph just as I hit the corner. I was so concerned about my speed, I forgot to look through the turn, minus 3 points. I was afraid I was going too fast now so, I braked inside the corner. That's another no no and another minus 3 points. I succeeded so well in braking that I lost another 3 points for going too slow through the corner. I tried to get more speed to pull myself out of the corner and encountered problems with the clutch. I found myself wondering if I'd blown the practical on the very last exercise. I found out I just barely passed that exercise. You can't have more than 10 points on any exercise and no more than 15 on the entire test. I had 9 on the cornering and 12 overall. I was relieved though I was annoyed with myself for nearly choking at the last test.
After we put all the cones away, our class headed to the classroom for pizza and soda. We were relieved. All of us had passed. We would fill out a feedback sheet on the class and get the sheets that said how many points we got. Then, the General Manager for the dealership came in and started talking to us about Harleys. He would show us various bikes and explain various highlights concerning them. One had a liquid cooled engine, the only one Harley makes. Another was featured in a show called Sons of Anarchy. The dealership also sells used very good used bikes. With one of those, you don't suffer as much depreciation though the manager pointed out that Harleys do a good job of holding their value.
He kindly took our class picture which our instructor would send to us later, Then, our tour of the dealership continued, we got to see the parts department and garage where they work on the bikes. We found out the dealership also offers winter storage. They have big shelves they can put the bikes on.
Lastly, we received our course cards and certificates. We would present the certificate and score sheet to the folks at MVA to get our motorcycle license. Then, we went our separate ways. That part saddened me. I knew I would see my instructor again. Out of gratitude, I promised I'd buy some more gear from the dealership. There were some things I would need like a rain suit and reflective gear so I can be seen at night. As for my classmates, I doubt I'll ever see them again. They were nice blokes. I wish I could show them the TMAX I'll be getting. I know 1 of them wasn't impressed with scooters. I think he might've thought a little differently if he had seen my future bike.
So, the class is over and sometime next week, I'll pick up my new faster bike. I can't wait to see how it rides and how much of an improvement it is. Ironically, I'm keeping an eye on its replacement. Yamaha allegedly has a 750cc TMAX in the works. That would cause me to trade in my 499cc bike. Stay tuned for more bike adventures. Cheers all!

2nd Day of Class
The 2nd day of class was the one where we really learned how to ride a motorcycle. We started with the most basic tasks and gradually built on those. One of the first tasks we did was a power walk. A power walk is where you engage the clutch and throttle slightly causing the bike to move at a very slow speed i.e. a walk. This taught us how to engage the clutch in 1st gear. Once we got the hang of doing that, we started riding the bike in 1st gear. Then, we progressed to shifting the bike into 2nd gear. Also, we practiced braking. On a motorcycle, you have a lever on the right handlebar for the front brake and a pedal on the right side of the bike for the rear brake. You need to use these in unison without overdoing it otherwise, you'll lock up the tires. If you do that at high speed, it can cause a crash.
In normal riding, you won't be using the clutch tons. In our training, we used it constantly. After a while, my left hand felt like it wanted to fall off. In normal riding, when you come to a stop, you shift the bike down into 1st gear and pull in the clutch lever until you're ready to start moving again. The alternative is to find neutral on the bike so you can let the clutch lever out. I found finding neutral on the bike to be very tricky. It was a half click with the clutch pedal and, it was easy to over step it. Still, it beat holding in the clutch lever all the time.
We ended up riding something like 4 and 1/2 hours which is the most I've ever riden. I found muscles sore that I didn't know I had. After our riding was over for the day, we went back to the classroom for our last classroom lesson before the written test. The lesson covered drugs and alcohol. Surprisingly, there is a problem with alcohol especially beer. Apparently, a number of motorcyclists forget that a 12 ounce beer has just as much alcohol as a 5 ounce glass of wine or a 1 and 1/2 ounce drink of hard liquor. If you think driving a car drunk is bad, it isn't close to riding a motorcycle drunk. Motorcycling is a lot of fun BUT, it requires far greater concentration and awareness. Both of those are significantly degraded when drinking. The result is enormously increased odds of a crash and fatalities. You would think motorcyclists would know better considering they know how tricky it can be to ride a motorcycle.
After the lesson, we reviewed, had the test explained to us and finally, we took the 50 question multiple choice test. To my delight, I aced the test. I'd studied for it and, I think it paid off. The last day of the course, we'd learn more skills on riding a motorcycle and take the practical. Stay tuned for my post on day 3 of the course.

1st Day of Class

Yesterday, I began my long await motorcycle safety course. The first day was was virtually all classroom work. To keep our attention, our instructor had each of us (there were 4 of us) go to the board repeatedly and write key points we needed to remember. When we hit the part where we had to identify the various important parts of the motorcycle ex. front brake lever, our instructor showed us the bike we'll riding for the practical part of the test. The bike is the Buell Blast. After learning about some of its features, I wasn't impressed. Most alarming in my opinion was the fact the bike doesn't have a fuel gauge! You have to guess how much fuel you have left. Also, I was surprised the bike only had a 3 gallon tank. I expected a bike of its size would've had a larger one. Still, the bike should work for the practical part. I just hope I have minimum problems getting it out of 1st gear. Like standard transmission cars, that's the one you'll be most likely to stall in.
The classroom part of the course went fine though I found myself very nervous. I haven't taken any kind of instruction like this since I took driving lessons with EZ Method Driving School over 20 years ago. Plus, I know from learning how to drive a car with a clutch how tricky it can be to get such a vehicle out of 1st gear. On a rare occasion, I still stall my car. In the case of this course, I'll have just a day to get the hang of riding a bike with a clutch (half a day today and half a day tomorrow). Lastly, there are a few serious differences with controls on a motorcycle vice a scooter. The left handle lever controls the clutch on a motorcycle whereas on a scooter it controls the rear brake. You have a foot pedal on the ride side for the rear brake on a motorcycle. The blast has a fuel control valve you have to remember to turn on and off whereas my scooter doesn't. Lastly, you have to put the motorcycle in 1st gear at the beginning. Every time you stop, you have to make sure you put it back in 1st gear and hold the clutch lever in. With a scooter, you don't have to mess with any of this. This makes me appreciate the hassles free of a scooter that much more.
Our second day of class will have us riding the bike and taking the written exam. The exam is 50 questions multiple choice. Our instructor assured us it will be the easiest multiple choice test we've ever taken. We'll see. I've been studying just in case. I'm determined to get my license if I can. Finished Up at Small Post Office

Yesterday, I finished up on a route at a small post office where I've worked the last 4 days. The regular carrier will be back to work Monday to do the route. I've really enjoyed working at that post office. There hasn't been any drama. No wondering who is going to call out just because they don't feel like going into work or they're hungover. Also, there hasn't been any bs like I can't do a bump because I have a prior commitment but, they won't tell you what the alleged commitment is. Instead, I've been able to concentrate on doing the route and enjoying chatting with the Postmaster and other carrier as I cased my mail. I found the customers on the route nice. One lady at a business was so pleased with me making sure she got her package, she called the Postmaster and gave me a compliment. The Postmaster was really pleased.
Today, I get to work at my regular post office. It should go well barring me having to take a bump off another route. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that won't happen. If it does, I'll remind myself I have my motorcycle safety course next week to look forward to. It looks like the course will definitely go. I can't wait. Cheers all!

Very Short Routes

Yesterday, I worked at the small post office I like so much. I've previously mentioned that this post office doesn't have any subs because their routes are so small. I found out HOW small yesterday. Out of curiousity, I checked the assessed time on the routes and, I found out they are rated at just 6 and 1/2 hours a day. Multiply that times 6 days and you get 39 hours. The carriers on these routes are just qualifying as full time carriers. A half hour less and they wouldn't be able to qualify for full time carriers. We have an auxiliary route at the post office where I regularly work that is rated at 6 hours that HAS to be carried by a substitute carrier as it doesn't have a enough hours for a full time carrier. Barring the low money, I suspect the carriers that do these 2 routes like them. Show time at their post office is 8:30 and they finish at 3 p.m. The only downside is they don't make lots of money and, they have problems if they want to take time off. The Postmaster at this post office has really been scrambling to get subs to cover their rural route 2 while the regular is gone. It creates a considerable headache for her if she allows one of her regulars to take a lot of time off. More so, as any sub that she gets can be pulled back at the last minute to their respective post office. A sub can work at any post office BUT, they belong to their primary post office. If their primary post office suddenly needs them, they MUST return to that post office. My primary post office has had problems with this too as we've been forced to use subs from other post offices.
Today, I hope to work at that small post office again. I'm getting the hang of the route they put me on BUT, I know there is the chance I may get called back to my primary post office. I told the Postmaster at the small one that though I do hope to get to work for her again. She is super nice and, there isn't the drama at her post office like there is at my main one. It makes for a more pleasant work environment. We'll see what works out.

Messed Over

The Laurel Maryland Harley Davidson dealership did a nice number on me today. As any readers I have know, I was big time looking forward to taking the motorcycle safety course so I could get my license. The Laurel dealership was where I'd signed up for the course and paid $350 for it. I took 3 days of leave from work so I'd be able to do the course. I drove out to the dealership this morning and quickly noticed I was the only one waiting for the course. A man who worked at the dealership asked if he could help me. I told him I was here for the motorcycle safety course. He promptly called the lady that does the scheduling. I was let in and, she informed me that the course had been cancelled because the community college that has the range they use said they couldn't use their range until October 19th. All courses till then were cancelled. The dealership for unknown reasons never got around to telling me. Because of their mistake, I missed out working on my favorite route and who knows how many other hours. Worse, I'll have to take 3 more days off to try to take the course later. The dealership was kind enough to find me another dealership that is offering the course Monday through Wednesday. Still, I'm not too pleased with them for their snafu. I'm going to keep my fingers crossed that I get to take the course next time. We'll see. Stay tuned.

Butt Kicked

As I previously reported, I found out I was supposed to work Wednesday and Thursday this week on a full route. The route I was supposed to do was my second favorite so it wasn't any super biggee. Then, that got changed. A regular carrier on another route asked for leave on short notice. It was the route another sub hates. I got tagged to do it. I don't know that route's case at all. My only saving grace was that I was familiar with parts of the route though I'd never worked the ENTIRE route. I got my butt kicked on it bad. At times, I thought I was going to go crossed eyed trying to find addresses on the mail case. Also, the route gets a LOT of mail. I hate cutting mail (that's where you leave mail that doesn't have to be delivered THAT day) but, I had little choice if I wanted to get on the street and deliver what I had at a decent hour. Once I delivered the mail I'd cased, I spent 2 and 1/2 hours trying to case the mail I'd cut. I ended up working over 12 and 1/2 hours. Realizing that I would have the same problem the next day, I went in at 5:15 in the morning. It was going in that early that enabled me to finish casing all the mail for the route and manage to get done by 5 p.m. So, I worked nearly 12 hours for a second day. I was seriously whooped. Thankfully, I got to do my favorite route yesterday though I got bit again. The small post office I worked at Monday asked if I could help there once I finished my route at my main post office. Normally, I would say NO WAY. But, I really like the Postmaster there and agreed to do it. So, after working over 8 hours at my post office, I drove to the other post office and worked another 2 hours. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I only have to do the route I'm assigned to today. We've had a lot of Saturdays lately where we had to break up a route. We'll see how it goes. If nothing else, I'm really going to enjoy my 3 days off for the motorcycle course after this grinding week. Cheers all!

Another Grinding Week

It looks like I'll have another grinding week at the post office. Yesterday, I was assigned to a different post office. This small post office which shall go unnamed doesn't have any substitute carriers so our post office provides them with subs when they can. That isn't often considering our own situation. One problem being assigned to this small post office is you don't get to do their routes very often so, you never really get to know them. Because of this, I arrived early so I could get a good jump on sorting the route's mail in its mail case. This enabled me to hit the street at a decent hour (approximately 1:15 p.m.). While working at this post office, my boss called and wanted me to help at the main post office afterwards. I said no way because I had no idea when I would get the route I was assigned to done. He then informed me that I would work full routes the rest of the week (I was supposed to deliver Express Mails Wednesday and Thursday). I sagged at that news as that means I'll have another grinding week at the post office. The only good thing about it is I'll earn a nice paycheck. I'm very much looking forward to the 3 day motorcycle safety course I'll get to take as it'll give me a breather from the grind and drama of the post office where I work. Future Bike

Yesterday, I went to Heyser Cycle to do some haggling and see what bike I would end up buying. Initially, I thought I was going to end up with either a Suzuki 400 or 650. Both of these offer more storage area than the Yamaha TMAX. Also, the 400 is $1,400 cheaper than the TMAX. Lastly, I knew I could work a deal on a 400 as one was on sale on Ebay for $5,300 or so. That was $1,300 below MSRP. However, Heyser offered me a deal on the TMAX and, the TMAX handles a lot better than the Suzuki bikes. The TMAX was designed as a scooter equivalent to a sport bike whereas the Suzukis were designed as scooters. When I had to make the call on which bike to get, that was what decided it for me. I plan to go fast on the thing when I get the nerve up and, I want to know I can rely on the bike handling well. With the TMAX, I shouldn't have any problems. So, I put a $500 deposit down on the TMAX and applied to Yamaha's financing. One deal I was able to get was 6 months interest free credit. I should have a large chunk of the bike paid off before that expires and, I should be able to pay the rest off when it does expire. Now, I have to wait for the motorcycle safety course so I can the license so I can ride the thing. I can't wait for that. Stay tuned for more updates.

2010 TMAX

I found out Yamaha's 2010 TMAX scooter will be coming out in February. From what I could see, the only change to the scooter is 2 different color schemes. You'll have a choice of all silver or red and silver. One bit of bad news on the 2010 bike is that the price going to go up almost $500. I definitely plan to get the cheaper 2009 model. I'm chomping at the bit to take the motorcycle safety course so I can get my license and get a TMAX. I drove out to Bowie today and, I held up traffic again going and coming. It was very annoying. When I get my TMAX, that won't happen any more. Plus, my bike won't be a joke like my Vino Classic is. 14 days and a wake up to my class. I can't wait.

Mail Load

We've been paying dearly for the Labor Day weekend at the post office where I work. Since the 3 day weekend, we've been playing catch up. The amount of mail we've had to carry has been significantly larger. Wednesday, when I returned from the route I was doing, I found 4 tubs of mail and flyers waiting for me for Thursday. To make sure I hit the street i.e. started delivering the mail at a decent time, I went in an hour early Thursday. It turned out to be a smart move. I had at least 4 more tubs of mail waiting when I arrived that morning. Thankfully, the route I was assigned to has a large mounted part so once I cased the mail on that portion, that was it. All I had to do was stick it in the box. On routes that have cluster boxes, I would have had to do a second casing and had to deal with lots of bad mail i.e. mail that wasn't deliverable. I'll be glad when we've caught up on the back log of mail.

Facebook

I discovered the last few days that you can't contact Facebook's support people directly. They force you to try to find the answer to your problem through their FAQ. I couldn't even get the FAQ to work right so there wasn't any way I could fix my problem i.e. I wasn't able to make ANY entries on my wall or make comments on friends entries. I was ready to chuck the whole thing when I got a bit of lucky inspiration. I decided to clear my browsers history and cookies. To my surprise, that fixed the problem. I'll have to remember that from now and remember to clear those every once in a while.
Overall, I haven't been wiped out with Facebook. The nicest thing about it so far has been being able to keep in contact with couple guys I knew in the Air Force. It's nice to see what they're up to.
Problem Sub

One of our problem subs got me again. This sub is known for calling out on Mondays or the day after a holiday. I don't know whether it's because they don't want to deal with the higher amount of mail i.e. laziness or they are hungover from their partying i.e. excessive debauchery. Whatever the reason, I wasn't thrilled to get contacted at 5:30 this morning that I was needed to do their route. Grrrrrr! I wanted big time to do the same back but, it wouldn't have hurt the sub who called out. So, I went in and did the route. One blessing of sorts is that I got added for 2 more days on another route which means I'll hit my 40 hours this week and get paid for every thing I worked. On days after a holiday, it's impossible to hit the accessed time and, you end giving the Postal Service some free hours unless you hit your 40.

Longest Ride

I went on my longest ride on my scooter yesterday. I wanted the Mike and the Mechanics CD "Hits." The only Best Buy store that had it in my area was in Glen Burnie. I used Mapquest to see what local roads I could use to get there. There was a way I could ride there on my scooter though I wasn't sure the roads would stay to 50 mph or less. I decided to try it. The ride went all right though I ended up holding up traffic again at points. That made me wish I had the super scooter I want to get. I made it to the Best Buy store and, I was able to buy the CD I wanted. While there, I picked up a couple others. I've heard of the Jonas Brothers and, I decided to see if their music was any good so I bought one of their CDs. Also, I bought one called Celtic Thunder. The name sounds a bit over blown. We'll see if their music is any good.
After buying my CDs, I began make my way back home. I stopped at the Arundel Mills Mall Dave & Busters to play some Spin & Win. Yesterday was the last day of their 1/2 price games promotion. Without that promotion, it can be pretty expensive playing the games there. Luck and timing were with me yesterday. I hit the 1,000 ticket light 25 times! I ended up winning over 29,000 tickets. I have over 230,000 now. It was fun. Dave & Busters still didn't have any prizes I wanted. I didn't need a blender. I have one already. I didn't want a Digicam as I won't be going on any trips any time soon to video and, I don't play various games. So, I saved my tickets. Hopefully, they'll get some better prizes as it gets closer to Christmas. We'll see. I'm also curious to see what new promotions they come out with. They're going to have to come out with a good one to get me to go back. It's too expensive to play their games otherwise.
That's all for now. 25 days till I get to take the motorcycle safety course. I can't wait. Once I take that, I'll be able to get my super scooter. Annoyingly, I haven't seen any great deals on a TMAX on Ebay. That's going to be very important in helping me get a good deal on one. I hope I don't have to hold off. We'll see. Stay tuned.

Music and My MP3 Player

I continue to download music to my new Zune MP3 player. It is enormously more convenient to have it on the player as it saves me from having to go through scores of CDs and, I don't have to worry about the player accidentally skipping on whatever music I'm playing. One drawback I've been having is that music I bought on-line and downloaded on-line from other services didn't transfer to my Zune music library. One example was "The Best of Bill Cosby." I had to buy that again, this time from Zune Marketplace. Another excellent album I've had to buy AGAIN is Glen Campbell's Greatest Hits. I really like his "Galveston" and "Wichita Lineman" songs. In some cases, Zune Marketplace doesn't have music I want like Nickelback's latest album which has 2 really great songs - Somebody for Me and If Today was Your Last Day. Still, overall, the player has been really handy. I plan to take it on trips so I can listen to tunes when I'm on the tour bus and, we're between stops. It'll make the time go by faster. It would also be nice to listen to while waiting for flights in airports. Cheers all!

Royally Messed Over

Yesterday, my fellow substitute rural carriers really did a number on me. We were down a route as usual. We've been down routes for 2 weeks now. I cased the down route so I didn't have to deliver any of it. That put me behind on the route I was assigned but, I managed to get out on the street in decent time and was doing a good job on it. I get a call from my boss. Apparently, other subs weren't taking their parts of the broken up route. I told him he needed to call them back in. He couldn't reach them. I finished my route and returned to the Post Office. There were 2 segments of the broken up route left.
One thing you must understand is that First and Second class mail MUST be delivered the day it is received. There are no exemptions on this rule. It MUST be delivered. Because one sub didn't take his segment, another sub would have to take 2. That sub wasn't going to go for that. The mail HAD to be delivered. So, I got tagged to deliver the segment the other sub SHIRKED. I deliver that segment. I'm the last rural carrier back because of it. The sub who was supposed to take the segment doesn't take it for unknown reasons. The mail MUST be delivered. I'm the only one at the Post Office who knows where this mail goes. Apparently, they won't call or can't reach any of the other subs. I'm made to deliver a SECOND bump that I shouldn't have had to deliver. I end up clocking out at 7:40 P.M.! Some subs who didn't do diddly got to leave at 1:30 P.M. I got royally messed over and, I was furious as I've been getting the shaft for the last 2 weeks. This crap must stop. I'll likely to filing my first grievance as otherwise it's almost certain to continue. I'd also like to retaliate on the subs who messed me over by calling out on their lazy asses. Then, they can pick up my shit for a change and see how they like it. We'll see what happens.

Old Sore

Yesterday, an old sore came back. I was hoping to have a normal day at the post office after a week and a half of having to take bumps or Express Mail in addition to having to do a full route. I wasn't going to be so lucky. 2 subs called out on one route. The sub that normally does the route called out sick. The sub that assigned to replace him called out as he had to work at his normal post office. That is always one of the problems with using a sub from another post office. So, we had to break the route up. It got worse. Someone needed to case the down route. The boss decided to have a sub who has another route to case it. This sub is a single parent. The sub has to be done by 2 p.m. so the sub can meet their kids when they get home from school. Fair enough right except, the rules state the sub should be able to do the job as any other sub which means if the sub has to stay late so be it. For months, the sub hasn't had to do that. So, that sub gets to go home by 2 p.m. while I'm slogging away at 7 p.m. delivering mail still. Unfair I say! Yet, nothing is done about it. So, I'm sore about the unfairness of it and having to stay out late. Another issue to add to my list with the seriously messed up post office.

Worse

I thought things couldn't get worse at the Post Office after Monday of last week's debacle where we were down 3 routes and had to do double routes. I was wrong. What is worse than that? Being down SIX routes! I couldn't believe it. A sub from another post office who was scheduled to work at ours got tagged to work at his on short notice. A regular carrier came down with chickenpox. One of our regular subs was still sick from his trip home. Another sub who was scheduled to work walked out and had to be persuaded to come back. Yet another sub had car problems and couldn't make it in. Lastly, we didn't have a sub to do the sixth route from the get go. It was the worst mess I've seen yet. I ended up casing mail on 5 different routes and, I ended delivering it on one till 8 p.m. I racked up 13 hours yesterday. Today, it looks like we'll ONLY be down 1 route. After yesterday, that'll be a cake walk. We'll see how it goes. Cheers!

End of an Era

To my shock, I found out Pastor R. B. Thieme Jr. died last Sunday. I've listened to Thieme's bible doctrine lessons for years. I found him an incredible teacher of the word. He was also very unique. Gruff, tough and times abrasive and yet, he was an incredible teacher. His teaching of the word has helped get through numerous personal crices. So many times when the crap was or seemed to be hitting the fan, his teaching would calm me down, give me hope and help me focus on the solution instead of the problem. I got to see him twice during a bible conference he held in Pensacola Beach some years ago. It was an experience to see him in the flesh. I wish I could've known him better. I was very saddened to hear of his death. In my opinion, he was an incredible man and pastor. My consolation is that he is "absent from the body and face to face with the Lord in a place of no more sorrow and no more tears." While his son Bobby carries on his great work of disseminating bible doctrine, I will miss him and I know other tapers will too.

Ouch!

I got my latest Baltimore Gas & Electric bill this morning. I was stunned. It was a whopping $156. That is the largest bill I've ever received from them. The kicker is I don't keep my apartment icy cold either. I'd hate to see some of the bills my friends are getting. Also, I dread what my bill is going to be like if Congress passes Cap and Trade. I've heard that will nearly double people's utility bills. They're expensive enough already. Jeez! Thankfully, I've been racking up lots of hours at the Post Office so I'll be able to pay it. I sure will be glad when the cooler weather gets here. This 90 degree plus stuff is for the birds. Cheers all!

Crazy Day

Yesterday, I had a crazy day at the Post Office. For starters, we were short one carrier for one of the routes so we had to break it up and, I had to take part of the route. Second, I tried to help case mail on the route. However, I don't know the mail case and, I ended going in circles trying to find addresses on the mail case. Lastly, the delivery to point service mail (DPS) got totally messed up. There were large amounts of mis-sorted mail in the DPS. This meant I had to go through all the DPS mail and find the mis-sorted mail for my route and the part of the other route I was taking. It was a real nuisance. Still, I managed and got through the day. Tomorrow promises to be worse as we'll be down 2 carriers and have to break up 2 routes. We'll see how long my day ends up being tomorrow. Cheers all!

The Heat

Yesterday was one of the days when I wish I didn't work for the Postal Service. The heat index hit 105 supposedly. The only thing that would've made it worse was if we'd had high humidity. I was sweating a bunch and having to make sure I kept tanking up on water. Luckily, the route I was assigned had places where I could run in and get drinks from water fountains. I plan to buy me a good water jug today so I'll be better prepared for the full route I have to do tomorrow. Cheers all!

Motorcycle Course

I stopped by the local Harley Davidson dealership. They offered the motorcycle safety course you have to take in order to get your motorcycle license. Without that license, I can't ride the super scooter I want to buy very badly. So, I asked what September dates they'll have and if I could get into a class on short notice. It turns out I can't get in on short notice as their classes fill up quickly. Concerning dates, once it's likely I can get 3 days off to do the course, I'll have to check back with them when they'll be offering the course on Mondays through Wednesdays. They also offer the course Thursday through Sunday HOWEVER, if there is one day I can't take off, it's Saturday. Saturdays are always a mess at the Post Office where I work. So, I have to take the course Monday through Wednesday.
On something related to the course, I ordered myself some motorcycle boots. You need something that has thick soles and covers the ankle for adequate protection. These will do the trick WHEN I get them. To my annoyance, they got back ordered. I'm hoping they'll show up sometime around the 17th. We'll see. Stay tuned for more motorcycle adventure stuff.

Back to Work

I had to go back to work today. I can't say I was thrilled. When I met the U.S. Customs official at the Toronto Airport, he asked if I liked my job. I told him no BUT, I do like the money I make. I think that sums it up. My job at the Post Office is a royal pain BUT, it pays for my trips and my cool new toys. In a couple months, I hope to buy a Yamaha TMAX scooter. I'd like to get it now but, I wouldn't be able to ride the thing as you have to have a motorcycle license for a bike with an engine that large (499cc). My job at the Post Office will be paying for that TMAX scooter. It'll also be paying for my future trip to Ireland (I can't wait). So, I guess I can't bitch and moan too much about my job. Considering how things are job wise in the U.S., I should count my blessings I have one. Plus, tomorrow I'll get to do my favorite route. That's all for now. Cheers!

Home Again

I made it home last night. The Globus Canada tour I was on finished Sunday. Globus had the tour finish with a bang by having the group go to Niagara Falls and a farewell dinner at the CN tower. Niagara Falls were very impressive. They are the biggest falls I've ever seen. Globus included a ride of the Maid of the Mist boat which takes you right up to the falls. The boat ride was a lot of fun. After the boat ride, I made my quickest trip to the U.S. when I dashed across the border so I could get a Hard Rock Cafe t-shirt from the U.S. Niagara Falls Hard Rock Cafe. Then, I dashed back to Canada to get the Canada shirt. The dinner at the CN tower was top knotch. However, I was saddened as the tour was over. We had a nice group.
Monday, I made my way home. I'd heard flights were being delayed into and out of New York. To my relief, I got out of Toronto all right. However, I got stuck in New York JFK Airport for 4 hours! When our plane arrived at Baltimore Washington Airport (BWIA), we got stuck on the tarmac for 40 minutes. Another plane had taken our spot and, they had to move the other plane so we could park. I ended getting home around 11 p.m. Aargh!
Thankfully, I gave myself a couple days to recover and catch up on stuff. I need to buy groceries, pay various bills and hand out presents I bought on the trip. However, I've already contacted my travel agent Joel Mills to see about my next tour. That one will be a while as there isn't any place I'm real anxious to see during the winter. A cruise would be nice but, I absolutely want my own cabin and, they charge double for that. I may do a trip home during the winter. I promised my Dad I would try to make it home more often. Come summer, I'm determined to see Ireland. That trip would be a 2 weeker. There is lots to see there. One nice thing about Ireland is it's not super far flying wise. Joel said Globus should release its summer Ireland tour dates soon so, I should be able to figure when I want to go and put a deposit down. Once I do that, I'll counting the days till I get to go to Ireland. Cheers all!
